Renewable Energy (RnwEn)

Learning New Energy Habits

Description | Indicators | Scoring Criteria | Definitions | Issues

These attributes form the basis for the scoring of this category.

In Version 1, only the energy in the manufactured product is scored. Use phase and end of life phase energy usage (or production) is not evaluated. See issues for discussion of this.

1) Amount of non-renewable manufacturing energy used annually by each facility and associated transportation

2) Location of renewable energy facilities supplying the manufacturing facility or used for transportation fuels associated with the facility:
- percentage of annual total energy needs provided by local projects within 50 miles of the facility
- percentage of annual total energy needs provided by sources greater than 50 miles away.

3) Renewable energy offsets:
- Company annual offset purchases equal to or greater than the total amount of nonrenewable manufacturing energy consumed annually.
- Company annual offset purchases equal to or greater than the total calculated amount of cradle-to-gate embodied energy of the product derived annually from nonrenewable energy sources?

4) Renewable energy used by suppliers in the manufacturer's supply chain:
 - At least one supplier utilizes renewable energy for a minimum of 30% of that supplier’s energy usage.
 -  Total supply chain renewable energy usage equals at least 30% of the total supply chain embodied energy of the product.
 - Total supply chain renewable energy usage equals 100% of the total supply chain embodied energy of the product.
